Now that we’re officially back in session, it’s time for some amusing high school and college anecdotes for any folks who have confused feelings about the school year. Even if you’re no longer in school and all your loved ones are out of school too, there is something about the dawn of autumn that brings back those funny, wild, and cringeworthy school memories.
Of course, I have many but the one I will reflect upon today took place during orientation week from my freshman year of college. I was waiting in a long line to pick up some badge that I needed to get access to some building when a finger tapped on my shoulder. I turned around and was staring into the eyes of someone I thought was a complete stranger.
“I think we were best friends in Pre-K,” she told me. All of a sudden, I realized that my long-lost friend Natalie was going to be my classmate for four years. I remembered her instantly. I remembered the games we played, the fun we had, and that one unfortunate time when I accidentally slammed the classroom door behind me and her hand was there. At first, it seemed like she didn’t remember that at all. She seemed to only remember the good parts. At least, I thought that was the case.
After exchanging niceties for a bit, Natalie introduced me to her other friend and quickly said, “he once slammed a door on my hand.” Of course, I added, “by accident when we were five!” The energy was sucked out of the room. Natalie turned and left. It turns out that people can hold grudges for a long time, and there’s nothing like a school environment to bring all that resentment back to light.
