Usually, it’s the customers Reddit loves to complain about when it comes to sharing service industry stories. That, or to vent about a manager or coworker. Rarely do we see everyone agreeing with a customer who had a poor experience, and rightfully so because these servers are usually having a rough time. However, this story gets into the nitty gritty of working with “lifer” waiters who do nothing buy judge and be unhelpful.
If you’ve ever worked in the service industry you have probably come across “lifers.” These are servers who have been serving for usually over a decade and plan to do so for probably another 10 years. This Reddit poster talks about how she, as a customer, encountered lifers. She was at a restaurant and having a mediocre time. The service was not the best, but it was obviously because her server was very new. She understands the plight, so she lets it slide, but she notices two waitresses in the bag watching the new guy struggle and just laugh. They refused to help him and were just being Mean Girls in the corner.
The newbie had several tables and was running around trying to make all of his tables happy. The mean girl waitresses weren’t doing much. So when OP needed the check, she tried to get her server to come over, but he seemed to have disappeared. So she tries to flag down one of the other waitresses, who tried their best to ignore here, but eventually cane over.
She asked for the check, and the begrudgingly got it for her. However, it was the wrong check and about ⅓ of what she owed. She tried to wave them down, but they gave her the cold shoulder. So she thought “fine, have it your way.” She paid the cheaper check and on her way out she said, “Thank you for the cheaper check!” It was a satisfying moment indeed when she was able to see the “Mean Girl” waitresses start to get flustered.
