It’s been a very long time since I enjoyed the experience of dining at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Enjoying memes, however, feels kind of close. Both buffets and memes offer a plethora of options to choose from. Just as a buffet provides a wide variety of dishes, from appetizers to desserts, memes cover a broad range of topics, humor, and cultural references. Whether you’re looking for a quick laugh or a super-specific joke about one of your more niche interests, there’s probably a meme out there for you.
Another similarity is that both memes and buffets offer a communal experience. At a buffet, you may share dishes with fellow diners or exchange recommendations. Someone might report that the spring rolls are off the chain, while another diner claims that the fried chicken is where it’s at. Since memes are a kind of shared language on social media, the act of exchanging them with others can create a sense of belonging and connection.
While we can’t claim that these memes are virtuous in nature or will change the world when you send them to your friends, they are pretty damn fun. And there’s something to be said about doing things in the name of fun.
