There are two types of young adults in the 21st century. Those who grew up on Spongebob and those who did not. At this point in my life, I know what category all my friends fit into, because I reference the show a perhaps concerning amount. I feel sorry for those around me who have no real contact with the show (I have a lot of friends who weren’t allowed to watch it because it was “fresh”) because there’s a Spongebob reference fitting for almost every setting one can encounter.
I recently re-watched the Spongebob movie (The 2004 one… the only one that exists to me) and it hold up better than I could have expected. The jokes are legitimately funny, the plot moves, and I was almost brought to tears when Spongebob and Patrick were all dried up and all hope was seemingly lost. These characters endure for a reason, and they still make some of the internet’s freshest memes.
