You know what they say about history. That if we don’t learn it, we are doomed to repeat it. Is the same true for history memes? If so, study up, young historian, for you have many memes to sift through. These won’t appear on your AP test though, as far as we know. Though we’re working on that. Think of Memebase as the library of Alexandria, except we won’t burn down because we are indeed a website.
This week I started watching Cunk on Earth, a wonderful program parodying educational history shows. The titular host confesses to an Ancient Greek historian. “Maybe I’m cold, but I just don’t care about people in ancient Greece.” It’s hilarious to watch the historian’s stupefied reaction. “That’s a shame,” she replies. We’re all lucky that there are a good handful of folks alive who do care about the goings-on of ancient Greece, and that some of them make memes about it for us.
